Credit + protection

Build credit without making it complicated.

Starting options, responsible card habits and what credit ranges mean when you are planning a home purchase.

Credit is a habit you build over time. Start with a manageable account, pay reliably and keep enough cash available to cover what you charge. There is no need to rush into several loans to create a credit history.

Start with one route you can manage

  • Your own card: compare fees and terms. Ask whether a prequalification check is a soft inquiry before authorizing it; prequalification is not approval.
  • A secured credit card: a deposit typically secures the credit line. Check annual fees, bureau reporting, refund rules and whether the card can later become unsecured. A prepaid or debit card is different.
  • A credit-builder loan: payments may build a savings balance that is released after repayment. Check interest, fees, reporting and when you can access the funds. It still creates an obligation.

Becoming an authorized user

A trusted person may be able to add you to an existing credit card. First ask whether the issuer reports authorized-user history. High balances or poor account management can hurt rather than help, and scoring models may treat the account differently. Agree on spending, access and how you can be removed. You do not need to make purchases on the card simply to be listed. Experian: authorized-user considerations ↗

A simple monthly routine

  1. Charge only purchases already in your cash budget, such as gas or groceries. Utilities can work too, but check card-processing fees.
  2. Keep the reported balance low relative to the limit. Paying before the statement closes may reduce the balance reported; timing varies by issuer.
  3. Pay the full statement balance by its due date to avoid purchase interest when a grace period applies. Paying interest is not required to build credit.
  4. Use payment reminders or carefully monitored autopay. Keep funds available and check statements for errors.

Give good habits time

Apply selectively and review your reports. If you later need an auto loan or another credit account, judge it by affordability and purpose. Different types of credit can be part of a history, but borrowing money solely for credit mix can add avoidable interest and debt. No card or loan guarantees a particular score increase.

Is 740 the top mortgage credit tier?

There is no universal “tier one.” Fannie Mae’s January 2026 purchase pricing table includes 780+, 760–779 and 740–759 as separate ranges. It combines score with loan-to-value. The adjustment is a lender-level pricing cost, not an automatic increase to your interest rate. Some eligible loans have waivers. FHA, VA and 15-year loans are not covered by that particular table. A score shown in a consumer app may differ from the score used for a mortgage. The calculator lets you explore the table’s cost difference without pretending it is a personal loan quote. Ask a lender how your actual credit report, income, debts and loan structure affect an offer.

Review and protect your reports

Request reports through AnnualCreditReport.com ↗. Checking your own report does not lower your score. Dispute inaccurate information with the bureau and the company that reported it. CFPB: checking your reports ↗

A free credit freeze can make it harder for someone to open new credit in your name. It does not build a score or replace account monitoring.
