What do Oklahoma utilities cost?
Use the averages as a starting point, then see exactly what they measure and how to replace them with a better estimate for one home.
Utility costs are useful for planning, but a statewide average cannot tell you what one address will cost. The numbers below are starting points with direct links to the underlying data. Replace them with 12 months of bills for the actual home whenever you can.
Is this a typical three-bedroom, two-bath home? No. The electricity and natural-gas figures are averages per residential customer account across Oklahoma. The data include different kinds and sizes of homes, apartments, heating systems and household habits. Bedroom count is not part of either calculation.

Electricity: what $132.05 means
The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports Oklahoma’s 2024 mean residential bill as $132.05 per month. The same table shows average use of 1,079 kWh per month, an average price of 12.24 cents per kWh and 1,878,818 residential customers. See Oklahoma in the EIA’s residential bill table ↗
This is an arithmetic average across customer accounts. It is not the median, a current utility quote or a model for a particular floor plan. A smaller all-electric apartment can use more power than a larger gas-heated home. HVAC efficiency, insulation, shade, thermostat choices, occupancy and rate plan often matter more than bedroom count.
Natural gas: how the $63 figure is built
The EIA’s Oklahoma table lists 53,477 million cubic feet delivered to residential customers in 2024, 989,595 residential consumers and an average residential price of $13.99 per thousand cubic feet. Converting the delivered volume to thousand-cubic-foot units, multiplying by the price, then dividing by customers and 12 gives about $63 per customer per month. The result is derived from annual statewide totals. It smooths cold winter bills and low summer bills into one number. Enter $0 for gas if the home is all-electric, then adjust electricity instead.
Water, sewer, trash and drainage: an OKC example
This is not a statewide average. Using rates in effect during September 2026, the example is $42.28 for water, $35.08 for sewer, $28.46 for trash and $7.22 for drainage. Total: $113.04. It assumes inside-city service, a 5/8-inch meter, 4,000 gallons of water and a 4,000-gallon average winter consumption for sewer. Verify the charges in OKC’s published schedule ↗
OKC water, sewer and trash rates are scheduled to change in November 2026. Other cities, rural water districts and properties outside the city limits use different schedules. Extra carts, unusual meter sizes and special charges can change the bill.
How to estimate the home you are actually considering
- Ask for 12 months of utility use or bills, with the owner or occupant’s permission. A full year catches heating and cooling seasons.
- Confirm which systems use electricity or gas: heat, water heater, range, dryer, pool equipment and EV charging.
- Check whether water, trash or any utility is included in rent or HOA dues.
- Compare household size and thermostat habits. The prior occupant’s bills are still a reference, not a promise.
